STRONG WOMEN in Lycksele, Sweden and the World through the years. Women's Day was celebrated with a cultural evening at Tjärhovet community centre.
Torchlight processions with some twenty participants marched from the town square and from Villa Veja. But before the programme started at Tjärhovet some forty people had arrived.
Karin and Elisabet from the Urbicultural Society read short narratives about a small selection of strong women - historical as well as contemporary - who have lived and live, who have served and still serve today in the Lycksele area.
Then Gärd from Women's Shelter told the audience anout the campaign now starting to reach out to places of work and meeting-places: "What do you do when things suddenly begin in earnest?" When you see someone around you who becoes a victim of violence, jealousy, an urge to control - how canyou help? The prime mover of reaching out with their message is the strength that can be noticed in every Shelter woman. Shelter work gives energy, community, power and joy.
Before the coffee break "the future" entered the stage: eight-ten girls had formed a Girls' Group at Tjärhovet. They explained why they started to meet, how they talk about and discuss everything under the sun in order to support and help each other and how fun they are having together.
During the coffee break the visitors could reflect on substantial issues about women in Sweden and in the world, and nice prizes were presented to those who could deliver the best answers.
The visitors mingled, had coffee, studied exhibition material, read and browsed through the rich supply on the book tables. A multislide presentation "Graffitti in Lycksele as you have never seen it" was rolling all the time in a corner, and many visitors stopped there to have look.
The evening finished with a some rock'n'roll music entertainment by Lars med Grabborkestern (Lars with the Lads' Band) - who scored a success, despite the fact that they were only running a rehearsal night, as they called it"
The organizers of the evening were the Urbicultural Society, the Women's Shelter, the comminity and leisure-time centre Tjärhovet, the educational Association of the Citizens' School and Lycksele 400 Years.
